The First Wrist Watches
The first wrist watches were made stylish by royalty.
Queen Elizabeth was given one in the late 1500s. The wrist watch was viewed as more feminine than the pocket watch.
The first wristwatches were designed for women. Men kept track of time still utilizing a pocket watch.
Men actually started using the wristwatch to keep time during wartime in the early 1900’s. Interestingly, men would strap pocket watches to their wrist so they could hold their weapons and synchronize drills with other troops. In fact, the first wristwatches for men were promoted to the military – those going into active service.
Watchbands have undergone many changes for both men and women. From leather to metal, with diamonds and sapphires and everything in between.
In 1915, The Rolex Watch Company, founded by Hans Wilsdorf, worked to improve the accuracy of the wristwatch. As a result, Rolex was recognized as a leader in this research receiving the first wristwatch Chronometer award.
With the rapid advancement of technology tracking time via a cell phone, PDA and IPod might possibly lead to a time when a watch is less important. However, I suspect for a long time to come when someone asks you if you know the time, you will instinctively look at your wrist even if you forgot to strap on your watch!
Enjoy,
Sue
